March the 22^nd is the annual date for World Water Day, the international day to promote and raise awareness of the importance of sustainable management of freshwater resources.

Starting life in 1993, the day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly. Each year has a topic which highlights a specific challenge or aspect of water resources. Past themes have included ‘Women in Water’ in 1995, ‘Water for the 21^st Century’ in 2000 and ‘Water Quality’ in 2010.

This year the theme is ‘Water and Wastewater’ and how sustainable developments can be achieved through reducing, treating and reusing wastewater.
